Long-Term Water Storage Applications

• Process Water Storage: Process water is any water used in industrial, manufacturing, power generation, or other commercial processes. It’s used for a wide range of purposes and tasks, such as cooling, rinsing, or as an active ingredient. The quality of process water can vary greatly depending on the need, such as strict pH control, deionization, or infused with enzymes for a certain production process. Large scale applications include data center coolant systems or cleaning for semiconductor manufacturing, while small scale applications include irrigation systems, and as an ingredient for chemicals, beverages, and pharmaceuticals.
• Potable Water Storage: Potable water is simply water that is safe to drink. There’s a fair amount of federal and state standards that must be met for a water source to be considered potable and safe for human consumption—namely the Safe Water Drinking Act (SDWA). When used in a water storage application, being considered potable means that it’s gone through a rigorous purification process to remove harmful chemicals and pathogens and meets the strict requirements of the EPA. Storage tanks rated for potable water storage must adhere to certain testing guidelines, and use materials and components rated for approval in accordance with NSF 61. Additionally, volume is a critical metric when selecting a tank. Larger volumes of potable water will need more robust steel or fiberglass tanks, while smaller volumes might use NSF 61-compliant plastic tanks.
• Wastewater Storage: Wastewater storage refers to the storage of both gray water and black water in a safe, and secure system. Gray water includes water used in sinks, showers, washing machines, and lawn runoff, while black water refers to raw sewage and highly contaminated runoff. Grey Water can be recycled in a treatment plant. Storing wastewater requires tanks that are rated for wastewater storage and adhere to the regulations for sealed water storage in AWWA D103. • Fire Protection Storage: Fire protection tanks are designed with resiliency and reliability in mind. They are designed, fabricated, and erected in compliance with NFPA 22, and are able to withstand harsher environmental conditions. These tanks are often a component in a larger fire protection system; with a pressure pump, piping to deliver water directly to hydrants, and an alarm system to alert users of a mechanical failure. They might use everything from corrugated steel tanks to underground cisterns, but with special additions and considerations. These systems are governed by NFPA 22.
