Our biodegradable erosion control products include Excelsior mats, wattles, and logs made with naturally strong and durable fibers from Aspen wood. Shredded into unique curls, harvested Aspens shards create an interlocking fiber with barbed edges that is perfect for erosion and sediment control. Often used as a biodegradable erosion control blanket, Excelsior’s curled fibers structure allows soil to bond with it when once it is wet, holding the soil in place. This makes it ideal for vegetation regrowth and erosion control. 100% natural, it simply composts after a period of time, leaving nothing behind.
Excelsior blankets are sediment control mats that cover large open areas and slopes to prevent erosion. Often used with new or regrowth of vegetation, Excelsior fabric holds the soil in place long enough to allow the plants time to take root. These biodegradable erosion control blankets are designed to stabilize areas with moderate erosion or low flows. Made entirely from aspen wood shavings, our Excelsior matting helps provide stabilization, support, and coverage along banks, channels, roads, and other low-flow areas.
Constructed entirely from a wood/excelsior matrix, this erosion control blanket is made to stabilize locations with slopes up to 3:1 and flows up to 6 fps. For added support, Excelsior fibers can be placed within a layer of polypropylene netting to help contain the fibers and increase support. Find out more about Excelsior blankets here.

Excelsior Logs
Excelsior logs are a great alternative for creating natural borders along shorelines, waterways, hills, and other slopes likely to erode. Erosion control logs build up coastlines and riverbanks in areas that have already lost soil, giving them time to stabilize and restore. Parks and Recreation departments use our alternative US erosion control logs for ecofriendly, natural restoration of streams, creeks, and other waterways in public parks or recreation areas. Excelsior erosion control logs generally last between one and two years, allowing enough time for short-term stabilization projects. For more information about Excelsior logs, see our alternative erosion control logs.

Excelsior Wattles
Another erosion control product is Excelsior wattles. Similar to erosion control logs in design and purpose, wattles differ in the density of the inner material. Wattles are made with a consistent width of fibers of shaved Aspen wood. Evenly distributed throughout the cylinder, the biodegradable fibers create less dense and more flexible natural erosion control. Excelsior wattles offer more flexibility and filtration options than their log counterparts. Wattles are designed to be used as perimeter controls on slopes, check dams, at curb cuts and around drain inlets. Construction projects might use this erosion control product on sites to keep contaminants contained and out of public areas, preventing pollution fines.
