Excelsior blankets are alternative erosion control blankets made to cover larger areas like hillsides or slopes to prevent erosion. Our grass seeding mats work like coir mats, or coconut erosion control blankets, but are made in the US from Aspen wood shavings. This makes it both more affordable and more available to you. Our Excelsior grass seed blanket is plantable. It holds soil in place, encouraging new grass growth and regrowth of existing grass, creating more stabilization for your slopes, hillsides, riverbanks, or parks and recreation areas.
Erosion Control Blankets/Matting
Our Excelsior erosion control blanket is designed to use on steep slopes with medium water flow. Often used for biodegradable erosion control, excelsior’s curled fiber structure with a built-in swell factor, allows the soil to bond with the fibers as they expand and form a stronger matrix when wet. Excelsior matting is used for less steep slopes and in low flow areas. This makes it ideal for vegetation regrowth and erosion control. Created from aspen wood shavings, our excelsior blankets and matting help provide stabilization, support, and coverage along banks, channels, roads, and other low to medium-flow areas.
Exclesior blankets and matting are plant-able, giving you the option to spread grass or other seed in the mats. The matting holds the seed in place and keeps them from washing away, providing a suitable environment for seed to germinate and grow. Because it is 100% natural, once the seed takes root beneath the grass seed mat, it simply composts over time, enriching the soil and leaving nothing behind.
Constructed entirely from a wood/excelsior matrix, this erosion control blanket is designed to stabilize locations with slopes up to 3:1 and flows up to 6 fps. For added support, excelsior fibers can be used with a layer of polypropylene netting to help contain the fibers and increase support. Erosion Control Blanket/Matting Features and Benefits
Excelsior Aspen wood mats are biodegradable allowing them to degrade over time, making them an economical choice for municipalities with tight budgets, as well as an eco-friendly choice for erosion and sediment control. Landscaping projects and city beautification initiatives can save man-power with biodegradable erosion control mats, as they don't need to be removed after use. As the erosion control blanket degrades, the grass seed matting becomes compost, enriching the ground and surroundings.
