Jute erosion control matting is recommended for slopes up to 3:1 and with flow rates of up to 6 feet/second. Jute fabric is rated as highly breathable and retains water well, meaning that it facilitates plant growth and helps seedlings get a good start. Ideal for short-term projects (with 6-9 months of field use), jute erosion control matting is well suited for use in sensitive areas looking to control erosion or facilitate vegetative growth. Made from the same spun natural fibers as burlap, jute mesh fabric is 100% biodegradable. Since it enriches the soil as it ages, jute erosion control blankets can be used on jobsites with delicate environments. Our jute netting's weave pattern also provides support and protection for young vegetation, adding support until the plants are more fully established.

When using jute rolls for erosion control, installation is simple to accomplish (see installation guidelines). There's no need to remove the jute mat for erosion control at the project's completion, since the jute matting fully biodegrades and enriches the soil. Biodegradable stakes and staples are also available.

Prepare the project area ground by removing large stones and adding any necessary soil amendments (ex. fertilizer).

• Grade the slope per the project's requirements.
• Optional: Spread seed across the prepared soil area (Or you can choose instead to broadcast seed overtop the erosion control cloth after it's been installed. Either application will work sufficiently.).
• Dig a small trench across the top of the slope to anchor the jute erosion control blanket. The trench should be approximately 6" wide by 6" deep and span the entire width of the slope.
• Install the jute erosion control matting by staking or stapling the netting to the trench. Allow 12" of the netting roll to extend uphill past the trench. Staples or stakes should not be placed any further apart than 12" for anchoring. Note: The type of soil will need to be considered when selecting installation tools like the staple or stake length and type.
• Fill the trench and compact the soil. This will strengthen the anchoring of the jute netting blanket in place. Seed the dirt in the trench for long term soil stabilization. Then fold the 12" of exposed netting at the top of the trench back down over the trenched area. Secure with staples or stakes.
• Unroll the remaining jute erosion control matting roll over the prepared area.
• Where jute rolls are to be overlapped, allow at least 3" of overlap.
• Stake or staple to secure the jute erosion control fabric at all seams and edges.

Long-Term Projects: For erosion control projects that demand a longer field-use life or that are in more rigorous site environments, Coir Products are often the best available option. Coir fibers are high strength and can be used on steeper slopes, in higher flow areas, or with locations looking for long term erosion control. The typical life span of a coir mat is anywhere from 4-to-6 years.

What site conditions are recommended for jute erosion control matting?

Jute erosion control matting (also often called jute netting) is best used on sites with low to moderate slopes (up to 3:1). The stormwater flow through the project area should also be low to moderate (up to 6 fps). Under these conditions, and if properly anchored, it should have an effective field use life of up to 9 months.

Do I have to dig a trench for anchoring at the top of the slope? Can't I just lay the fabric out and stake it down?

We recommend following the installation recommendations for best field performance. Environmental factors place more pressure on the fabric than you might realize. Properly anchoring the fabric as indicated holds the fabric securely in place and can make a significant difference in the success of the project.

I need a biodegradable erosion control solution that will last longer on the project. Are there other options?
