Non woven geotextile fabric is used for filtration, stabilization, erosion control, and drainage. Polypropylene non woven filter fabrics are more cost effective and last much longer than organic fabrics, such as coir and straw. The 3.5 oz non woven geotextile fabric is a lightweight non woven needle-punched geotextile that offers similar flow rates to temporary erosion control fabrics but has a grab tensile strength of 90 pounds. For even stronger control, non woven geotextile fabrics come in sizes up to 16 oz. with tensile strengths up to 425 lbs.

3.5 oz Non Woven Geotextile Fabric Installation

These are general installation instructions for non woven geotextile filter fabrics.


  • 1. Prepare the installation area by removing any objects or debris that could puncture the polypropylene non woven filter fabric. This includes stumps, rocks, or other sharp objects. For roadway projects, vegetation and roots (as well as topsoil) may also need to be removed.
  • 2. Smooth and grade the installation area. If replacing the topsoil with a higher grade soil, do so in this step and grade the area afterward.
  • 3. If using for erosion control on a slope, anchor the fabric end in a trench across the top of the slope. (Please contact us for specific trenching instructions.)
  • 4. Roll the fabric out across the installation area, according to the specific project plans. Overlap fabric rolls by 12 to 18" to avoid gaps.
  • 5. Secure the non woven geotextile fabric using staples or stakes, pulling it as tightly as possible as you secure it to the ground. The fabric should be secured along the edges and where the rolls overlap.
  • 6. Cover the non woven needle punched geotextile fabric with aggregate or other backfill per the project requirements. Aggregate lifts should be at least 6" thick (or more for softer subgrades). Compact the aggregate.
