Cistern Liner Installation Guide

When preparing for cistern liner installation, you will need to measure and inspect your cistern tanks for the different components that make up your cistern tank. These components could impact your cistern liner installation and should be greatly considered. These components could include:

• Pipes
• Tight Openings
• Fittings

Your cistern liner will be built to the dimensions and specifications of your cistern tank, fitting around the different components. Considering the different components of your cistern tank will ensure that different protrusions in your cistern tank are outfitted with boots to fit around these areas.

When installing a cistern liner to your cistern tank, you will need to connect and secure the cistern liner to the tank. Because you want to protect the durability and containment properties of the liner, battening and bands will be placed on top of liner. This will secure the cistern liner to the walls of the cistern. From each edge of the battening section, measure 1 inch from edge. Drill the bolt through the cistern wall, the geotextile and the battening. From those drill holes, measure every 12 inches and then drill the remaining holes. After that, remove the battening.

Next, roll out your cistern liner and place it into the tank. Once you verify that the cistern liner is in the correct position and extends to the top of the tank, smooth out the bottom corner and weigh down the cistern liner with a sandbag to keep it in place.

Mark the drill holes on the liner for that section of battening while holding the battening against the liner and the side of the cistern tank.

When you fold back the liner you need to drive the wedge anchors partially into the drilled holes with a hammer. Be sure to leave the bolt threaded onto the anchor.

When securing the gasket to the side of the tank, stretch the gasket materials taut over the wedge anchors and hammer anchors. Between the gasket and tank liner, leave room for the application of a polyurethane sealant.

Apply the polyurethane sealant while wearing gloves. Under the gasket, through and around the wedge anchors and around the entire perimeter of the tank, apply small beads of the sealant.

After applying the sealant, apply pressure to secure it by hammering battening over the cistern liner and wedge anchors.

Last, secure the battening into place by using the nuts and washers.

A note about Geotextile Lining between Cistern Tank and Cistern Liner:

Consider the type of cistern tank before installing your cistern liner. If your cistern tank is made from a rough material like cement or concrete, then placing geotextiles between the cistern tank and cistern liner will reduce the chances of your cistern liner being abraded and torn. Adding the layer of geotextiles will protect your cistern liner and should be installed on the anchors before the liner.

Here's what a liner pipe boot is:

A liner pipe boot is an item designed to protect your cistern liner from anything that could penetrate it. The protrusions will be fixtures of your cistern tank that need to be lined and with a protective covering. These protrusions don't even need to be pushed directly through the liner. When your cistern liner is constructed, these protrusions are sized and constructed to be fitted through pipe boots, which allow the protrusions to fitted through the liner cleanly. Find the typical installation for a pipe boot below:

• Locate the pipe and fitting on your cistern tank, cut a hole in the liner so that pipe and fitting can fit through the cistern liner.
• Slide the boot over the pipe and cut the base so that it covers the cut in every direction by 4-6 inches.
• Clean the liner and boot with a mild liquid or water. Using soap is not recommended.
• Mark the edges of the base and top of the boot on the liner to ensure its location. Then remove the boot.
• Apply a piece of 2 inch double sided tape on the liner with the corners should overlap by 14 inches.
• Place the boot in place and press down to remove any wrinkles from the tape.
• Secure all the edges with 4 inch single sided tape.
