Coir 700 Matting for Medium Grade Slopes

Coir Mat for Landscaping and Erosion

Coir mat 700, also called coir mat 70, is long-lasting coir fiber matting designed for erosion control use in municipal projects with medium-grade slopes. This coir erosion matting is a proven tool in protecting slopes against wind and water erosion. Manufactured from coconut fiber, coir fiber matting is 100% biodegradable and offers an affordable Green Building alternative for municipal projects, as well as landscaping.

Coir mat 700 will satisfy federal clean water regulations when applied properly. We also offer other erosion mat products for different slopes and site conditions.

Benefits of Coir Mat

  • Safe for environmentally sensitive areas and wildlife
  • 50% open weave in fabric supports seedlings and plugs as they grow
  • Fully biodegradable, compliant with Green Building programs
  • Controls erosion on exposed soil from wind and water
  • For slopes of less than 2:1
  • Field life of 4-6 years, before naturally decomposing
  • Economical coir mat price fits nearly any budget

Coir Mat 700 (Coir Mat 70) Specifications

Coir fiber matting is manufactured with a standard weight of 700 g/m², providing an erosion control solution that will last for years. Coir 700 matting, also referred to as coir mat 70, is a semi-permanent soil stabilization measure, providing 4-6 years of erosion control and plant protection. Even better, there is no need for a disposal plan with coir 700 matting, as it fully composts over its field-use-life. Because of the 50% open weave, it can be seeded to encourage plant growth, which further helps with water filtration and erosion control. It can also accommodate plugs, which provides faster vegetation growth results.

It can be used effectively for erosion control on shallow to moderate hillsides or slopes, of up to 2:1. With a 50% open weave, coconut coir 700 matting is adaptable to seeding and for use with plugs. Coir 700 matting is a biodegradable semi-permanent erosion control measure, with no disposal costs needing to be incurred. It is preferred for use on moderate slopes up to 2:1 or on jobsites with more demanding environmental conditions.

For projects with a shallow slope (of up to 1:1) coir mat 400 is often recommended. However, for jobsites with a slope greater than 2:1 or that is subject to extreme site conditions, coir mat 900 might be the coir erosion matting needed for the project.

13.1 ft x 165 ft (4 m x 50 m) 240 square yards/roll (200 square meters/roll)

Coir Mat Installation

Installing coir fiber matting is a simple process, with the added benefit that it does not need to be removed at the completion of the erosion control project. When these instructions are followed, installation is both quick and easy.

  1. 1) Grade the installation area for uniformity. For effective erosion control, the coir fabric needs to be in full contact with the soil.

  2. 2) Dig a trench at both the top and bottom of the installation area.

  3. 3) Unfurl the roll of coir 700 matting and lay it over the graded area. Lay the fabric in the direction of the water flow, overlapping at least 6 to 8 inches at the edges of the rolls.

  4. 4) Secure the coir 700 matting with staples or stakes*. Stake installers are a helpful time-saver for the installation crew.

  5. 5) Back fill the trenches at the top and bottom.

See our Erosion Control Installation Accessories flyer for more information.

Note:Biodegradable stakes are also available to secure the coir 700 matting for soil erosion to the hillside. When installing this coir geotextile for erosion control, choose between wooden stakes or biodegradable stakes made from recycled plastics and polymers. These stakes last on average 24-36 months in the field before naturally decomposing. Contact us to see just how easily our coir mat price fits into your project budget!

Coconut Coir Mat 700 Applications

Coconut coir mats 700 are practical as an affordable green construction option on slopes of 2:1 where it is often difficult for vegetation to take hold. The 50% open weave gives plants room to grow through the coir mat, while also providing support and protection from the elements. With the coir mat 700, landscaping projects also benefit; It stabilizes the soil, provides a favorable environment for new plants to grow, and helps hold moisture in the soil.

Coir 700 matting's biodegradable mattress is constructed from coir fiber gathered in the coconut harvesting process. The coir fabric's netting is also biodegradable and made from coir fibers. Together, this makes erosion control matting an environmentally friendly BMP that enriches the soil while controlling erosion.

Use coir 700 matting in the following municipal and landscaping applications:

  • Wetland restoration
  • High flow channels
  • Vegetative support
  • Soil stabilization
  • Streambank restoration
  • Slope stabilization
  • Hillside and shoreline erosion control
