Coir Mat 900/Coir Mat 90 Specifications

Coir mat 900 will satisfy federal clean water regulations when applied properly and will support plant growth for long-term erosion control. Since the fibers fully compost, enriching the soil as they do so, the coir erosion mat is a semi-permanent application and can be left in the field indefinitely and no removal costs need be incurred. Coconut fiber matting is manufactured with a standard weight of 900 g/m², providing an erosion control solution that will last for years.

Coir 900 matting is a semi-permanent soil stabilization measure, providing 4-6 years of erosion control and plant protection. There is no need for a disposal plan with coir 900 matting, as it fully composts over its field-use-life. Because of the 38% open weave, coconut fiber erosion control mat can be seeded to encourage plant growth (which further helps with water filtration and erosion control). The coir erosion mat can also be cut to accommodate plugs, which provides faster vegetation growth results. Coir mat 900 is the heavy-duty erosion control mattress for use on steep hillsides, and jobsites with demanding environmental conditions.

For projects with a shallow slope of up to 1:1 coir mat 400 if often recommended. However, for jobsites with a moderate slope of greater than 1:1, coir mat 700 might erosion matting needed for the project.

Erosion Mat Installation

Use these instructions for a fast and simple erosion mat installation. It is an easy process to implement, with the added benefit that the erosion mat does not need to be removed at the completion of the erosion control project.

  1. 1) Make sure the installation area has been graded uniformly. To be effective in controlling erosion, the coconut fiber erosion control mat fabric needs to be in full contact with the soil.

  2. 2) Place a trench at the top and at the bottom of the installation area.

  3. 3) Unfurl the roll of coir 900 matting and and set it in place over the graded area. The erosion mat should be placed in the direction of the water flow, overlapping at least 6 to 8" at the edges of the rolls.

  4. 4) Secure the erosion mat with staples or stakes*. Stake installers are a helpful time-saver for the installation crew.

  5. 5) Fill in the trenches at the bottom and top of the installation area.

See our Erosion Control Installation Accessories flyer for more information.

Note: There are several choices of stakes available for installation of coir mat 900. Biodegradable stakes are one option for securing the coconut fiber erosion control mat to the hillside. The biodegradable stakes will typically last 24-36 months before decomposing into the soil. Stakes made from hardwood are also a popular choice, whereas metal stakes are sometimes preferred for projects with a longer duration. Erosion Mat Applications

Use erosion mat 900 for long term erosion control on steep slopes or site conditions that require a durable solution. The coconut fiber erosion control mat is helpful in stabilizing slopes, protecting young plants, and helping them get a good start in demanding conditions. Erosion matting also is effective in controlling erosion from both wind and water. The 50% open weave gives plants room to grow through the coir coconut fiber mat, while also providing support and protection from the elements. With coir mat 900, landscaping projects also benefit, in that it acts as mulch and helps hold moisture in the soil.

Coir erosion control matting is biodegradable and constructed from coir fiber gathered in the coconut harvesting process. The coconut fiber erosion control mat's netting is also biodegradable and made from coir fibers. Together, this makes the erosion mat an environmentally friendly BMP that enriches the soil while controlling erosion.

Use coir 900 matting in the following municipal applications:

  • Wetland restoration
  • High flow channels
  • Vegetative support
  • Soil stabilization
  • Streambank restoration
  • Slope stabilization
  • Hillside and shoreline erosion control
