Open top flexible water tanks are made of durable materials depending on the type of liquid they contain. Because these materials resist mildew and rot, completely drying off the tank before storing it is not necessary.
Soft, collapsible onion tanks are easy to use and store, filling in minutes and laying flat when empty. Fire fighting emergency water storage tanks like these provide quick, reliable response to disasters.
The 22 oz. PVC fabric, a medium grade fabric, is a economical choice with high flexibility for emergency response. Best for temporary liquid transportation, the recommended contact time is up to one year. The 30 oz. Elvaloy commercial grade fabric is best for long term use. The fabric is thicker for rougher terrains and fast transport. Recommended contact time for this fabric is three to five years.
Industrial grade fabric uses 40 oz. PVc material and is meant for more demanding transportation and emergency situations. Thick and rigid, this fabric is meant for rugged terrains. It has a recommended contact time of up to seven years.
PVC and Elvaloy fabric are suitable for drinking water and non potable water storage. More durable fabrics like 40 oz. PVC have high chemical resistance and withstand contact to hydrocarbons.
Low side models of onion tanks have a capacity of 250 to 10,000 gallons. Low side tanks have a wider base and lower profile. Used in locations where space is not an issue, low sided onion tanks can be used for water storage or secondary containment.

High side models of onion tanks have sides that are taller than a standard low side onion tank. High side onion tanks have a capacity of 500 to 20,000 gallons. For temporary water storage and cleaning, a high sided tank is a great choice because of it extra gallon capacity and greater depth. High sided onion tanks are also helpful in locations where space is limited.

Open water onion tanks can be used to store multiple types of liquids and come in different fabric options depending on what applications the tank will be used for. Collapsible Tanks can be used to store water, both gray and black, drinking water, recovered crude oil, jet fuel, firefighting foam, sewage, and other contaminants.
Defining the type of liquid that needs to be stored will determine what type of fabric should be used to make the onion tank. 
Onion tank fabric options:
When setting up and installing the onion tank, make sure the ground is level and remove any debris or sharp objects. For added protection, lay out a berm liner or ground cloth in the intended area.
Unfold the tank evenly. Make sure the fitting is free from obstruction. Check that the discharge valves, drains, and other fittings are closed. Next, verify that nothing will get in the way of the onion tank as it is filled. Drape the fill hose carefully over the top. Never leave the tank unattended during the fill or discharge process.
Always use the flexible reinforced hose when fitting fill or discharge connections to the tank to avoid damage and tank failure. Never overfill the tank.
When ready to empty the tank, connect discharge hoses to the discharge port. When connected, open the gate valve. Opening the vent is not required to discharge the liquid. Using a pump will speed up the discharge process.
While inspecting the area for debris and sharp objects prior to installation will save the onion tank from sustaining any damage, accidents sometimes happen. Keep a vinyl repair kit on hand to ensure you're able to patch tears or punctures to the onion tank immediately.
